……..
Self has dedicated herself to naming the phenomenon that forcibly frames our contemporary understanding of the black body in a collective fantasy. In ‘Gut Feeling’ the artist explores the dichotomy of intimacy as it relates to both isolation and infatuation, through vignettes of intimate moments between lovers. The couplings of the imagined pairs allow for both personal and political interpretation. Through both form and concept, Self ask the audience if the dissembled figure can be reconstructed with parts and pieces from another.
